Modi-Trump G7:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Calgary just before the ceremonial banquet for the world leaders, although his agenda for the bilateral meetings at the G7 summit has not yet been released.

Toronto: Monday marked the end of the prospect of a bilateral meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump during the G7 summit.  Trump’s early departure was revealed by the White House as a result of growing tensions between Iran and Israel. Modi-Trump G7

White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt shared that President Trump had a productive day at the G7 Summit, highlighted by the signing of a significant trade agreement with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Although Modi’s bilateral meeting agenda hasn’t been made public yet, he arrived in Calgary just before the state supper hosted by Canada’s Governor General Mary Simon.

Following the recent terror attacks on tourists in Pahalgam and Trump’s divisive comments about using economic penalties as a negotiating tool to reduce tensions between India and Pakistan, this was expected to mark the first face-to-face meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump.

On the second day of the meeting, President Trump did not show up.  Rather, he met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is presently the G7 president, in Kananaskis to start the day.  Trump even wore a Canadian flag pin, which was a remarkable gesture given that he had previously made jokes about making Canada the 51st state in the union. Their conversation was regarded as friendly and amicable.

Trump did not hold back, though, in accusing former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and former U.S. President Barack Obama of being responsible for Russia’s expulsion from the international forum.  Notably, during the tenure of his predecessor Stephen Harper in 2014, one year before Trudeau’s inauguration, Russia was barred from the G8.Modi-Trump G7

Carney and Trump’s discussions were mostly about trade, according to a statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, and both parties committed to continuing talks “towards a deal within the next 30 days”.
