Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1883–1966), popularly known as Veer Savarkar, was a political theorist, author, poet, and liberation warrior, according to the Ministry of Culture. “While studying at Fergusson College in Pune in 1904, he founded the secret society Abhinav Bharat to spark an armed uprising against British rule.

While in London, he went on to form the Free India Society and authored a groundbreaking book on the 1857 revolt, reinterpreting it as the First War of Independence with powerful new insights. After being detained in 1910 for his revolutionary efforts, Savarkar attempted a daring escape in Marseille before being apprehended and given a 50-year term at the Andaman Islands’ Cellular Jail.  According to the Ministry, this never broke his spirit or lessened his unwavering desire for India’s freedom.

He joined the Hindu Mahasabha after being freed in 1937 and presided over it for over seven years. The Ministry adds that Veer Savarkar dedicated himself to eradicating untouchability through his relentless efforts in the Hindu Mahasabha. In 1951, he dissolved Abhinav Bharat and committed the rest of his life to upholding the ideals of the Hindu Mahasabha.
